The New Science Disputed With the Church

Post by chandoonact »

The neo-extractives policy continues to overflow any ideological crack. Thus, the " fire lobby " unleashed its fury more than ever. For example, the Brazilian Pantanal, the largest continental wetland on the planet, which covers a large part of the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, registered 16,000 fires in 2020, which became the year most affected by fire according to data of the National Institute of Space Research (Inpe)16. During 2020, Argentina ranked second globally for the number of sources of fires that affected wetlands and native forests, behind which are the soybean, mining, and large real estate agent (private development) lobbies . The fires affected 14 provinces and destroyed more than one million hectares.

Likewise, despite the drop in demand for fossil fuels (which at some point made their price negative), in countries like Argentina, subsidies to oil companies continued. The last straw was the special data of the tax on large fortunes – a measure that was difficult to install in the face of staunch opposition from the right – which was supposed to exclusively alleviate the ills of the pandemic. However, the approved project allocates no less than 25% of the amount collected to finance the fracking gas that is extracted in the Vasa Metra mega field. In Mexico, in September 2020, Víctor Toledo, one of the great continental references in political ecology, had to resign from his position at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Semarang.

Toledo is a defender of agroecology and the ecosocial transition, and under his mandate he promoted the prohibition of glyphosate and criticized the Mayan Train project, one of the emblems of the "development" of the López Obrador government, which violates the rights of ancestral communities. His resignation exposed, once again, the limits of selective Latin American progressivism. Finally, while in Colombia the fight against the practice of fracking continues , both in Ecuador and Argentina the attack on mining deepened, despite the fact that it does not have a social license and that the mobilized citizens seek to activate available institutional devices (consultations public initiatives in Cuenca, Ecuador; citizen initiatives in Chubut, Argentina), which are denied and/or delayed by the authorities.
